Since Jeff Brohm arrived in West Lafayette, Purdue has looked like an entirely different football program. But in Friday’s Music City Bowl against Auburn, that was not a positive.
Competitive in nearly every game over the last two years, the Boilermakers were run off the field by the Tigers from the opening kickoff. Auburn set a new FBS record, scoring 56 points in the first half of a bowl game. It also set an SEC record for most points scored in a bowl game.
When the beating finally came to an end, Auburn posted a 63-14 win over the Boilermakers.
From Brohm, whose teams have been so competitive in West Lafayette, it was evidence that the program still has a lot of improving to do.
“Losing hurts, and losing this way makes it tougher,” Brohm said after the game. “That one snowballed faster than most…Credit goes to [Auburn]. They made their breaks.
“This game shows us that as a team we have a long ways to go.”
Purdue finishes the season 6-7, marking the first time in his head coaching career that a Brohm-coached team has ended with a losing record.
Friday’s loss to Auburn was the worst loss for Purdue since a 56-0 loss to Ohio State on Nov. 2, 2013. It was also one of the few times the Boilermakers haven’t been competitive under Brohm.
