Jeff Brohm’s team is coming off of a heartbreaking 32-29 loss at Syracuse. He spoke to Tom Dienhart of Rivals and Boilermaker Country’s D.J. Fezler about what he wants to see from his defense moving forward.
The offense wasn’t the problem for Purdue, it was the defense. Aidan O’Connell had 424 yards passing with 3 touchdowns, and led his team down the field to score with 51 seconds left in the game. However, the defense allowed a go-ahead touchdown with 7 seconds on the clock just shortly after.
Syracuse QB Garrett Shrader exposed the Purdue defense through the air and on the ground. He had 183 yards passing with 3 touchdowns, and 83 yards rushing on 17 carries. It looks like Brohm knows what he’ll be working on at practice with the defense.
Brohm: We need to get better at containing QBs on defense. Hurt at times vs. Penn St. and Syracuse.

Another thing that Brohm admitted Purdue could have done better was the play calling on the final defensive drive. Just after going ahead, Purdue allowed Syracuse to score on a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Brohm: We were too aggressive on our defensive calls on the last Syracuse drive.

The penalties were something that ended up favoring Syracuse. Purdue had the most penalty yards (138), while Syracuse had 74 on the day. Brohm believes that technique adjustments in the secondary will cut down on that.
Brohm says the team must adjust its techniques in the secondary to avoid pass interference and defensive holding calls that have been called early in the season.
