The college football world lost a legendary figure Saturday with Florida Atlantic announcing the passing of head coach Howard Schnellenberger.

Schnellenberger is best known for putting Miami Hurricanes football on the national landscape, but his list of accolades is especially long. He won national championships with Bear Bryant at Alabama, recruited legendary QB Joe Namath to Tuscaloosa, was a part of the perfect season for the Miami Dolphins, and captured a national championship as head coach of the Hurricanes.

One figure that was especially impacted by Schnellenberger’s legacy was Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm. Schnellenberger was Brohm’s college coach at Louisville during his playing days from 1989-93.

In a statement on Twitter, Brohm referred to Schnellenberger as his mentor. Brohm also called Schnellenberger “a person of character who led by example.”

Here is Brohm’s full note:

Brohm also spent time on Schnellenberger’s FAU staff as QBs coach in 2009. He will enter his fifth season leading the Boilermakers in 2021 with a 19-25 overall record.
