Longtime Purdue offensive coordinator Jim Chaney is on the move again. This time, he’s headed back to Knoxville.

Wednesday, Tennessee confirmed that Chaney would be the next offensive coordinator on Jeremy Pruitt’s staff. He was previously on the Volunteers’ staff from 2009 through 2012, serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley.

Chaney returns to Knoxville after spending the last three seasons on Kirby Smart’s staff at Georgia. His contract at Tennessee is a 3-year, $4.8 million deal.

Chaney has made several stops during his coaching career, but first gained recognition as one of the best offensive minds while on Joe Tiller’s staff at Purdue. He was a member of a coaching staff that revolutionized the way offenses operated in the B1G.

He was with the Boilermakers from 1997-2005, serving as the offensive coordinator for nearly all of Tiller’s years as head coach. After departing West Lafayette, Chaney had a brief three-year stint in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams.

In 2009, Chaney returned to the college game at Tennessee. He’s jumped around frequently since then, making stops at Arkansas (2013-2014), Pitt (2015), and Georgia (2016-2018).

Chaney got his start at the FBS level at Wyoming in 1993 as a graduate assistant. He was promoted to offensive line coach in 1994.
