Jim Harbaugh and Michigan leadership maintain ‘some tension,’ per Joel Klatt

Jim Harbaugh is back at the helm for Michigan after serving a self-imposed suspension at the start of the season. However, FOX broadcaster Joel Klatt believes there is still some tension remaining between the head coach and Michigan leadership.

In an appearance on “The Herd,” Klatt explained his belief about the dynamic in Ann Arbor:

“The dynamic with him and his leadership at Michigan is interesting,” said Klatt. “I believe that there is some tension, and it’s the reason why the president had to jump in and do the new contract.”

“I don’t like that at all,” said Colin Cowherd in response.

What Klatt appears to be referencing is Harbaugh’s decision to return for the 2023 season. That message was first announced by new president Santa Ono, a message from Harbaugh that Ono said he communicated to AD Warde Manuel.

“I just know that there’s some tension,” Klatt continued. “And by the way, it has seeped into this self-imposed suspension at the beginning of this year. He had a self-imposed suspension, Michigan suspended him.”

“Do you think he wanted to do that,” questioned Cowhered.

“Of course not, that’s why his players had a ‘Free Harbaugh’ shirt on,” answered Klatt. “They’re not taking a shot at the NCAA, think about that. Just read between the lines.”

This is not the first time the idea of tension between Harbaugh and the AD has surfaced or been reported. Then there is the earlier report from this season that Harbaugh already has his mind set on a return to the NFL if he gets a job this offseason.

Harbaugh’s near-annual dance with the NFL is nothing new, but if Klatt’s comments of tension are accurate, it could be the push the head coach needs to leave Ann Arbor. Time will tell.
