Jim Harbaugh explains importance of naming Michigan Stadium tunnel after longtime HC Lloyd Carr

Jim Harbaugh recognized how important it was for the program to have the Michigan Stadium tunnel named after former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr.

Carr last coached Michigan in 2007, but he remained a fixture at the university. He coached Michigan for 13 seasons and won a national championship in 1997. Even 25 years after that championship, Carr continued to be recognized for his accomplishments at the school.

Michigan’s tunnel is an important part of the stadium’s features and history. Harbaugh explained the history of the tunnel and the reason to name it after Carr per Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit:

“People can attest that a lot of buildings have changed at Ann Arbor. One wonderful way that something hasn’t progressed is the Michigan tunnel. We love our gritty, tough, functional tunnel. And it’s named now for a coach in Lloyd Carr, who is that awesome, great, gritty, tough guy.”

Harbaugh appreciates the program’s history and wanted to pay respect to one of the greatest coaches in the program’s history. Carr finished his 13-year career at Michigan with a 122-40 record. He is 3rd all-time in wins at Michigan for a head coach.

When Carr is honored, it will bring back many memories of when he was in charge of the Wolverines. This year’s team is looking to win the program’s 1st national championship since 1997.

The Wolverines have an important matchup against Penn State in Week 7.
