Jim Harbaugh and his staff have things clicking at Michigan heading into 2023. Coming off of back-to-back B1G titles, the Wolverines have a strong staff and a number of returning players in place to make another run at a championship.
Recently, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg put together a list of some of the top assistants in college football to keep an eye on coming out of 2022. Michigan had multiple coordinators listed, including offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore.
Moore has done wonders coaching the offensive line, helping the unit win back-to-back Joe Moore Awards in 2021 and 2022. Heading into 2023, Moore has dropped the “co-OC” label and will serve as Harbaugh’s lone OC this year.
Here’s what Rittenberg had to say about Moore’s status heading into 2023:
Since Michigan shifted Moore to oversee the offensive line and added a coordinator title, the program has surged. Michigan has won back-to-back Big Ten titles, made its first two College Football Playoff appearances and won consecutive Joe Moore awards as the nation’s top offensive line. Moore, 36, will serve as Michigan’s sole coordinator in 2023 following Matt Weiss’ firing, and has a chance to further elevate his profile for head-coaching jobs, especially in the Big Ten, Big 12 or ACC.
Moore was joined on Rittenberg’s list by Michigan DC Jesse Minter and special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh.
Rittenberg pointed to Minter keeping the Wolverine defense “on a dominant path” despite the loss of elite talent and 2021 DC Mike Macdonald. Jay Harbaugh was noted for his work with special teams — particularly Michigan’s kicking game — and rising stock as a potential head coach candidate for Group of 5 jobs.
With all 3 of his coordinators making ESPN’s list of assistants “heating up,” Jim Harbaugh certainly has the pieces and culture in place to keep things rolling in Ann Arbor. We’ll see how the program responds as the defending B1G champs, two years running.
