After the Wolverines took it to Colorado State in a 51-7 routing, head coach Jim Harbaugh had some thoughts about how Michigan’s quarterback group performed.
In the season opener, returning starter Cade McNamara had the first reps with the offense. JJ McCarthy – who will start for the Wolverines in Week 2 – also played and played well in Week 1.

Just a few short weeks ago, Head coach Jim Harbaugh announced that McNamara would start the season opener against Colorado State, and that McCarthy would start in Week 2 against Hawaii. However, after McNamara completed just half his passes in a little more than two quarters, he was pulled from the game in favor of McCarthy.
The sophomore Wolverine McCarthy entered the game in the third quarter and broke free for a 20-yard touchdown run shortly after. He didn’t look back, helping to open a 37-point lead and eventually clinch the win for Michigan. Harbaugh praised the QB, saying he was “electric”, and his play certainly showed it.
Could Michigan’s win help McCarthy clinch the starting job, or will McNamara’s experience win out? Fans will find out after next week and McCarthy’s chance to start against Hawaii.
