Jim Harbaugh and his Michigan football team were in the air on the way to Pennsylvania when the Big Ten announced its 3-game suspension of the Wolverines head coach for sign-stealing. Harbaugh revealed Monday that the Wolverines learned of the suspension through social media posts.
“Just someone showing me their phone. Via social media, like yeah, social media,” Harbaugh said during his press conference.
Michigan expected to learn the news from the Big Ten office instead of finding out via social media.
“(Athletic director) Warde Manuel was pretty upset, he was on the plane, too,” Harbaugh said. “He was pretty upset that he heard it through social media and not through the Big Ten office.”
Manuel released a scathing statement in response to the B1G’s decision on Saturday. Harbaugh is appreciative of the public support from Michigan leadership in the wake of the suspension.
“Tremendous support. Warde has been ten toes down, he’s standing right here with us,” Harbaugh said. “His support, President (Santa) Ono’s support, the board of regents. Our team was already galvanized, they’re together, but boy, I’m feeling a galvanized Michigan, alumni network… and the fanbase which goes coast-to-coast and worldwide, really being galvanized thing. That’s a tremendous thing. That’s a body of metal thing. That’s going to be tough to beat.”
