Jim Knowles has a talented linebacker unit, but the group contained a few more question marks than in years past. Without Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg around — the starting duo in recent years — Ohio State is turning the page to a new era in the middle of the defense.

The good news is it is not an entirely new set of faces at linebacker. Cody Simon, a veteran contributor, has been penciled into a starting role for a while now, and he’s joined by Sonny Styles and CJ Hicks, former 5-star prospects, at the position.

Head coach Ryan Day confirmed on Tuesday that the Will LB starting spot will go to Styles after battling with Hicks for the role. Though a former safety, Styles possesses a unique skill set that includes an impressive athletic frame that has been developing since his arrival in Columbus.

So, what does that mean for Hicks, the former 5-star recruit who has not made a major impact in 2 seasons in the program? According to Knowles, Hicks will still get his chance to leave a mark throughout 2024.

The defensive coordinator clarified he views Hicks as “a one” and expects all 3 linebackers “should play equally.” Knowles eventually listed all 3 as options to play at Mike linebacker while pointing to Styles and Hicks as the major options at Will.

Overall, that’s a good sign for the Buckeye defense after losing the veteran contributions of Eichenberg and Chambers to the NFL. Provided the linebacker group stays healthy; it should be another area of strength for an already elite unit this fall.
