JJ McCarthy is one player at the focal points of Michigan’s fall camp with the sophomore engaged in a QB battle with returning starter Cade McNamara. This battle might lead into Week 1 of the 2022 season, but that isn’t stopping McCarthy from making the big plays.
In fall camp, McCarthy connected on a deep pass with junior wide receiver Roman Wilson which was the highlight of practice.

There has been a debate from fans and outside media that McCarthy should have been the starting quarterback for Michigan this past season. Head coach Jim Harbaugh opted for McNamara, who had previous experience and knowledge of the offense.
Despite McNamara starting, McCarthy did play during his freshman season. Harbaugh used McCarthy as an extra weapon and a change of pace for the offense.
This past season, McNamara completed 210-of-327 of his passes for 2,576 yards, 16 touchdowns, 6 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 141.9. As a true freshman last season, McCarthy completed 34-of-59 of his passes for 516 yards, 5 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 152.3.
