JJ McCarthy revealed that he almost didn’t play football. During an interview on Friday afternoon, McCarthy discussed what turned things around for him and picking football over hockey, per Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit.
McCarthy began playing hockey around the age of five years old. Luckily for Michigan fans, he chose football instead his freshman year of high school.
“I started when I was like five years old,” said McCarthy. “I had to make a really big decision. I made that decision around freshman year of high school. It was one of the hardest decisions I had to make. It was my first love.”
JJ McCarthy is leading Michigan to an undefeated start, but the Wolverines quarterback almost chose to play hockey.
"It was one of the hardest decisions I had to make. It was my first love," he said, crediting his football toughness to his hockey days.

In this season alone starting for the Wolverines, McCarthy has a total of 12 touchdowns, 1,615 yards passing, and a QBR of 80.7.
McCarthy may have made a tough decision picking football over hockey, but it seems as though the odds are in his favor.
