Joel Klatt breaks down ‘no brainer’ hiring of Sherrone Moore at Michigan

Joel Klatt believes Michigan had an easy decision to make once Jim Harbaugh bolted for the NFL.
With Harbaugh now preparing to lead the Los Angeles Chargers, the Wolverines moved quickly to hand the reins of the program to Sherrone Moore. The offensive coordinator and offensive line coach thrived as an assistant — and as an acting head coach in 2023 — and saw his stock at an all-time high after the national championship.
“This was a no-brainer. That was my first thought overall. This is exactly what should happen, what was going to happen,” said Klatt in his latest podcast episode. “…Everybody knew this was going to happen. You don’t do what he was able to do this year as the acting head coach in some of their biggest games and not get this job, in particular with the culture they’ve built at Michigan.”
Klatt went on to describe the culture in Ann Arbor as “sustainable.” Keeping the next head coach in-house allows for Michigan to build on that sustained culture established by Harbaugh.
“Jim Harbaugh built something that has legs and is sustainable. Now, that sustained effort is going to be handed to Sherrone Moore,” Klatt explained.
As for Moore’s pitch for the job, Klatt pointed out the new head coach had a unique opportunity to show what he brings to the table. Moore went 4-0 as the acting head coach this season, including a pair of top-10 victories and a rivalry win over Ohio State.
“(Moore) did prove it. We got to see this. He didn’t have to go into a job interview and say this is what I would do if I was a head coach,” said Klatt. “They got to see it in practice and they got to see it in some of the biggest games that Michigan had, in particular down the stretch.”
Now, Moore faces the task of keeping the roster intact and the culture rolling as the head coach. We’ll see how he responds, along with rounding out his first assistant coaching staff with some key pieces likely joining Harbaugh in Los Angeles.
