Joel Klatt was watching USC get a huge season-opening win on Sunday night, just like many college football fans across the country. Defense has been a major issue for Lincoln Riley during his entire coaching career at both Oklahoma and USC, but the unit looked better in Week 1.

After firing defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and bringing in D’Anton Lynn, there is hope among USC fans that the Trojans coach has found someone who can take the defense to a championship level.

With the performance by the defense, Klatt thinks college football might just get to see a Riley-coached team that can play some balanced football.

“I guess we are going to find out what a Lincoln Riley team can do with a good defense,” Klatt said on X (formerly Twitter). “So impressed with their effort and toughness down the stretch.”

This was a big win for the Trojans as they begin a new era as a member of the Big Ten. If the defense is going to be able to play at a level close to the performance in Week 1, then the Trojans may be contending in the B1G sooner rather than later.

USC will be back in action next Saturday when the Trojans host Utah State. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. PT.
