Jonathan Smith is officially in East Lansing, hitting the ground running as Michigan State’s new head coach. Shortly after the season-ending game on Black Friday, Spartan leadership moved quickly to land Smith with a Saturday announcement.

On Sunday, Smith made the trek to East Lansing to assume his post. During a video shared from the plane, the new head coach said he’s eager to embrace the opportunity with plenty of work to do.

“A new era, a new opportunity. Not going to sugarcoat (it), there is work to do. There is no doubt, we know that,” said Smith. “We’re excited about diving into it. Getting around these players currently and selling a vision of opportunity and competing for championships and doing it together.

“Doing it together does not mean just the locker room. It means this community, this fanbase and I can’t wait to meet a lot of them.”

Monday morning, MSU also shared a glimpse of Smith checking out Spartan Stadium. Adding to the scene, it was a picture-perfect snowy landscape as Smith perused the home of the Spartans.

Now, Smith will get to work to shape the roster and improve the Spartans ahead of the 2024 season. Michigan State’s home opener is set for Aug. 31 against FAU.
