Jonathan Smith says heated rivalry feelings ‘crystalized’ after first game in MSU-UM series

Jonathan Smith is in his first year as the coach of Michigan State, and he is learning the way of the B1G. He was introduced to the Michigan State and Michigan rivalry on Saturday, and the game showed how much animosity there is between the 2 teams.
The game ended with members of both teams brawling and a melee ensued as the Wolverines won 24-17. Smith talked on Monday about the experience of playing in the rivalry, and how he will never forget that game.
Jonathan Smith: “I think for me (the rivalry) crystalized Saturday night. … That thing is different. That thing is important. That’s why it’s so frustrating. … After experiencing that sucker, you will not forget that thing.”

Smith: "We will not forget Saturday night, I promise you that. But we're moving forward." Says he felt "genuine dislike" between MSU-Michigan and fan bases before the game. "After experiencing this one time, this thing is different. And that crystallized for me on Saturday."

The Spartans battled in this game, as they cut it to a 24-17 with 6:12 remaining in the game, but were not able to complete the comeback. It was a physical game from the outset, as Spartans LB Jordan Turner was ejected in the 2nd half of the game due to a targeting penalty.
The heated nature of the series especially boiled over late in another scuffle between the rivals. On Monday, Smith confirmed the Spartans and an assistant and player trapped in the middle of a large group of Michigan players while AD Alan Haller has called on a Big Ten review of the matter.
Smith and Michigan State have to have a short-term memory though, as the schedule gets even tougher next week. Up next is a home game against the undefeated and No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers. The game will be at 3:30 p.m. ET from Spartan Stadium.
