Jim Harbaugh is keeping his word when it comes to Josh Gattis and the Michigan offense.

When Harbaugh hired Gattis to run Michigan’s offense he was prepared to step away from that aspect of his team. Harbaugh wanted to give his new offensive coordinator complete control.

Now that Michigan has closed out the spring season, Gattis says Harbaugh has not turned back on his word and has been hands off with the offense.

“Coach Harbaugh has been amazing to me, just the support he’s given our offense,” Gattis said, according to the Detroit News. “He hasn’t been involved at all. He hasn’t stepped in, and I think that’s one of the greatest attributes of a great head coach. And let me say this, a lot of people have put a lot of questions and comments out there in this spring — this is a sign of what great head coaches do. They’re willing to change. I don’t think Coach Harbaugh has ever been labeled one way as a head coach.”

Michigan’s offense has sputtered under Harbaugh at times and has been the hurdle that has prevented the Wolverines from winning a B1G title. He took a “collaborative” approach to running things, but has handed all control over to Gattis.

With Gattis in charge, there’s a feeling that the “handcuffs are off” the offense and the Wolverines will utilize their speed and talent more appropriately in 2019. Through spring, most of the offense has been implemented, allowing players to get adjusted to the new scheme and style.

Hiring Gattis was a significant move for Harbaugh, and allowing his new offensive coordinator to run the show proves that Harbaugh is willing to make changes to help the program. Perhaps it was the last obstacle standing in the way of Michigan breaking through.
