Julian Sayin had to win the starting quarterback job in fall camp, and in just his 2nd career start on Saturday the Alabama transfer already forged his way into the Ohio State football record book.
Sayin completed a Buckeye-record 15 straight passes, besting Will Howard’s mark of 13, as he rolled up 289 yards passing and four touchdowns to lead the top-ranked team in the country to a 28-0 lead over FCS team Grambling State. With 11:38 still left in the 2nd quarter, Sayin was busy throwing his 4th touchdown pass of the game and 2nd to Jeremiah Smith, a 9-yard scoring strike that gave Ohio State a 28-0 lead.
Sayin and Smith also hooked up midway through the first quarter on an 87-yard touchdown connection that gave the Buckeyes a quick 14-0 lead.
By halftime, it was 35-0 Ohio State and Sayin had 306 yards passing, although his record completion streak had come to an end after 16. Sayin was 18 of 19 through the air at halftime, proving that he isn’t quite perfect but was coming along fast in his growth as the starting quarterback for the defending national champions.
Last week, Sayin outplaced Texas’s Arch Manning in Ohio State’s 14-7 victory over the Longhorns, which lifted the Buckeyes into the top spot in the new AP Poll.
In Week 2, against a slightly lesser opponent, Sayin showed he was up to the task as he entered the OSU record book.
