Matt Nagy is sticking to his guns right now. Despite drafting Justin Fields in the first round, the Chicago Bears are currently planning to move forward with Andy Dalton as the starting quarterback for Week 1.
A lot can change between now and the first week of the NFL season, but so far, Nagy has said Dalton is the starter and Fields is the backup on the depth chart. It would be easy for Fields to take issue with that strategy, but the former Ohio State star says he believes in the process with his new team.
“If I don’t believe in it then it’s not going to work out. So my job is strictly to get better, to be the best quarterback I can be, and help my team win,” Fields said, according to WGN’s Larry Hawley.
Nagy recently went on The Collinsworth Podcast on Pro Football Focus to talk about the quarterback situation.
“I mean, Andy is our starter. Again, I can’t predict anything,” Nagy said on the podcast. “You know how it goes. There’s so many things that can happen between today and Week 1. But Andy is our starter and Justin is our No. 2 and we’re going to stick to this plan. You just got to trust the plan.”
Chicago trading up to select Fields at No. 11 was a move many considered one of the best of the 2021 NFL Draft. Many thought the Bears would start the new quarterback immediately, giving him some much-needed experience as a rookie.
Right now, that’s not the plan. It sounds like Fields is fine with that.
