Kansas forever: Head coach Bill Self, Jayhawks agree to lifetime contract

Bill Self will be staying in Kansas for a long time. For life, actually.

In a press release Friday, the Jayhawks announced that Self and the University have reached terms on a lifetime contract extension. According to the release, Self’s new deal will be a five-year rolling agreement:

“His current contract, which was set to expire next March, is being replaced with a new five-year rolling agreement that automatically adds one year at the conclusion of each season for the remainder of his career.”

Self has been the head coach of the Jayhawks since 2003-04. He led Kansas to the 2008 National Championship and guided the team to the 2012 National Championship Game, which ended with a loss to Kentucky. Self has won 522 games with the Jayhawks.

The timing of the contract is a bit of an odd one as Kansas remains in the middle of an ongoing NCAA investigation. According to the wording in the contract, Self cannot be fired by Kansas for cause related to any outcome from that investigation. The full details of Self’s contract can be viewed here.

Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how this contract plays out for Self and the Jayhawks.
