Minnesota will have to attempt to pull off a comeback victory without one of their top defenders on the field.

Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press reported that Gophers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. would miss the remainder of Saturday’s game against Maryland with a foot injury. He’s one of the best secondary defenders for Minnesota.

Winfield left the contest early with the injury.

Winfield has been huge for the Gophers this season. In Week 1 against New Mexico State, the safety had one of the most impressive punt returns of the season. The following week, he recorded a game-sealing interception against Fresno State.

Through three games, Winfield has registered 16 tackles and an interception. He also has 110 yards and a score on three punt returns.

Minnesota entered Saturday’s game against the Terrapins 3-0.
