Kirk Ferentz is making an internal promotion to fill a vacancy on his offensive coaching staff.

Ferentz announced Wednesday that veteran assistant Jon Budmayr will be the Hawkeyes’ wide receivers coach for 2024. Budmayr joined the Iowa staff in 2022 as an offensive analyst. He was promoted to senior special assistant to the head coach ahead of the 2023 season.

“Jon is an excellent coach and a perfect fit for this position,” Ferentz said in a program release. “He has a wealth of knowledge and a familiarity with our program that make him a natural to take this role.”

Budmayr has assistant coaching experience, though he has not been a wide receivers coach before. He spent six seasons on staff at Wisconsin, his alma mater, including three as quarterbacks coach. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Colorado State for the 2021 season.

“My wife and I are very appreciative to have the opportunity to be at Iowa,” Budmayr said via the team website. “I have so much respect for Coach Ferentz and the program he’s built over many years. I’m excited to work for him and alongside the great people on our staff. I’m also very appreciative of the opportunity to work with an incredible group of student athletes and help them develop on and off the field.”

Budmayr replaces Kelton Copeland, who did not have his contract renewed for the 2024 season.
