Kirk Ferentz picks up 200th Iowa win, moves into No. 2 all-time among B1G coaches

Kirk Ferentz picked up more than just the 4th win of the season in Iowa’s blowout of Washington on Saturday. It’s a new milestone for the Hawkeyes coach.

Saturday’s win gives Ferentz 200 victories in his Iowa tenure. It moves him ahead of Amos Alonzo Stagg for 2nd all-time among Big Ten coaches, only trailing Woody Hayes’ 205 wins at Ohio State.

“It probably means I’m getting old,” Ferentz joked in his postgame interview when asked what 200 means.

“In all honesty, the biggest thing today was getting back on our feet and winning that football game. Just really proud of our guys.”

Iowa didn’t even wait until the final whistle to celebrate the head Hawkeye. When the clock hit 2:00 for the 2-minute warning, er timeout, Ferentz was featured on the video screen and waived to the Kinnick Stadium crowd.

“It got me a little bit,” Ferentz admitted when asked if the stadium announcement was emotional. “It’s applicable that our ’04 team is here being honored.”

Ferentz has been the Iowa head coach since 1999. His Hawkeyes record is now 200-121 overall, and 124-86 in Big Ten games. Ferentz also has 6 wins from a 3-season tenure at Maine from 1990-92, giving him 212 head coaching victories.

Ferentz’s Hawkeyes travel to Michigan State in Week 8. We’ll see if he gets win No. 201.
