Kirk Ferentz knows this was a trying week for the Iowa program. Fortunately, the Hawkeyes did not let distractions get in the way on Saturday.

This week, it was announced that OC Brian Ferentz would not return following the 2023 season. He had been on a 25-points-per-game mark in contract amendment, but interim AD Beth Goetz went ahead and confirmed the OC will not be back for 2024.

Following the 10-7 win over Northwestern, the head coach praised his team for responding to “bumps in the road” this week. Ferentz admitted this week was something you can’t prepare for, but his group responded on the field against the Wildcats.

“I think you saw today who our guys are and how they operate. We talked about it in August, bumps in the road and it’s one of the factors in any season. Kind of falls in line with you know our best guys got to play their best, we need stories, and then it’s true for anybody,” said Ferentz. “Whether it’s football or life, how are you going to respond to things you aren’t wild about? Things you didn’t anticipate, things you can’t prepare for, how are you going to respond to that? That’s just life.”

Ferentz pointed to the quality people who are continually involved in the program and and reflected with pride on his team’s performance:

“Lot of really quality people involved in this program over time. Best part of my job certainly has always been working with great people, and I feel the same today,” explained Ferentz. “The way the guys responded today, just really proud of them because there’s nothing easy about this week.”

Somehow, Iowa is 7-2 on the season after Saturday’s win. And with other results around the B1G, the Hawkeyes are somehow back in first place in the B1G West. We’ll see if the Hawkeyes can grab control of the division for good this time around.
