In an age where college football coaches try to scrap every nickel and dime they can, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is taking a pay cut.
According to Marc Morehouse of The Gazette, Ferentz is taking a $50,000 pay cut in the 2017-18 season so the Hawkeyes could add another staffer to the football program.
“It’s to help our program,” Ferentz said during a news conference on Tuesday. “It was something we agreed on (Ferentz and athletics director Gary Barta) and thought it would be good for the program.”
Ferentz’s salary will drop from $2.47 million to $2.42 million for the year, but his contract beyond the 2017-18 season remains unchanged.
A $50,000 cut isn’t exactly a huge chunk for a coach set to make nearly $30 million over the next 10 years, and the cut could even pay for itself if a new staffer helps Ferentz reach one of his incentives in the coming years. But it’s still not something you see too frequently in college football.
