NFL and college football analysts have almost taken sides when it comes to the NFL Draft this year. You’re either on Kyler Murray’s team or you’re back Dwayne Haskins, and it’s nearly a 50-50 split.
Count Kirk Herbstreit as a Haskins backer. In a recent interview with SportsCenter on ESPN, the college football analyst is all in on the former Ohio State gunslinger.
“He took over as a starter this year in Columbus for J.T. Barrett and right away established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country,” Herbstreit said. “I love his six at 6-foot-4. I love his poise and the way he’s able to sit in that pocket. When you look at an NFL style quarterback, the two things that jump out are decision making and accuracy. I don’t know if I’ve seen a quarterback when everything is clean that’s more accurate than Dwayne Haskins. Whoever picks up No. 7 from Columbus has a big-time threat on their hands.”
With Murray focusing his attention on pursuing a career as an NFL quarterback, there’s been some conversation regarding which guy would be the better long-term player at the professional level. You could make the case for either player, but Herbstreit would put his money on Haskins.
In his only season as a starter, Haskins led the NCAA in passing yardage and touchdown passes. He’s been compared to quarterbacks Carson Palmer, Ben Roethlisberger and Jameis Winston. Haskins, by many, has been considered the best pure passer in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Still, Murray seems to be the popular pick to be the first quarterback drafted next Thursday. We’ll see if anything changes between now and then.
