Kirk Herbstreit names Big Ten team among top performers of Week 1

Kirk Herbstreit liked what he saw from Rutgers in Week 1.

Herbstreit included the Scarlet Knights in his top-performing teams of Week 1. Greg Schiano’s squad defeated Boston College to open the 2022 campaign 1-0.

Rutgers went on the road to Massachusetts and upset the Eagles 22-21. The Scarlet Knights were a 9-point underdog in the game.

Rutgers starting quarterback Noah Vedral was out for the game. The Scarlet Knights used 3 different QBs on the opening drive. Evan Simon finished as the leading passer, going 8-of-12 for 63 yards.

For the ground attack, Kyle Monangai led the way with 19 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown. Al-Shadee Salaam had 5 carries for 53 yards, with a long of 23, and a TD. QB Gavin Wimsatt had a 48-yard rush.

Schanio’s squad has its home opener in Week 2. The Scarlet Knights host Wagner at 4 p.m. Et Saturday.
