Kirk Herbstreit already has his top 4 before Week 9 has even concluded, as he has 2 B1G teams in the top 4. Ohio State comes in at No. 2, and Michigan comes in at No. 4, according to the ESPN college football analyst.

Herbstreit explained his top four to Chris Fowler during the broadcast of the Tennesse-Kentucky game:

“You have to look at who they’ve played,” Herbstreit said. “Teams that have been ranked gives them the edge. Slight change. They won at LSU, they beat Alabama in consecutive weeks, what they’re doing tonight against Kentucky, you have to recognize that.”

Ohio State is only behind Tennessee in Herbstreit’s top 4. The Buckeyes are ahead of No. 3 Georgia, and their rivals in Michigan at No. 4. Ohio State has 2 wins against ranked teams, with its latest coming in a thrilling 44-31 road win over No. 13 Penn State in Week 9.

Michigan is ahead of a one-loss Alabama and an undefeated Clemson, who are the first 2 teams out on Herbstreit’s list. The Wolverines have 1 win over a ranked team by dominating No. 10 Penn State 41-17 at home in Week 7. Michigan is currently winning 29-7 at home in Week 9 against its rival Michigan State.

The first College Football Playoff Rankings of the 2022 season are set to be revealed on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
