Kirk Herbstreit knows what The Game means to the fans who bleed scarlet and gray — he represented the Buckeyes during his playing days.

So, after a loss like Saturday’s, at home, as a huge favorite, with their College Football Playoff dreams possibly on the line, Herbstreit is well aware what everyone associated with the Ohio State Buckeyes is feeling.

Herbstreit has also been a college football analyst for ESPN for many years, so he knows when it’s appropriate to give credit to the other side, personal feelings aside. After Saturday’s game ended, Herbstreit took to social media to do just that.

“Rivalry weekend. Ya just never know. That’s why they play the games. Congrats to (Michigan head coach) Sherrone Moore and Michigan football,” tweeted Herbstreit.

Herbstreit saw what everyone else saw.

He saw an Ohio State offense that managed just 252 total yards on the day, which wasn’t nearly good enough.

He also saw an Ohio State defense allow just 234 total yards on the day, which would’ve been good enough on most days.

But not Saturday, because when the Buckeyes needed a stop they couldn’t get one. Michigan’s clutch 11-play drive late in the 4th quarter produced the game-winning field goal with 45 seconds left, and that was that in the 13-10 shocker.

The Game produced a result that only a rivalry of this magnitude could, and Herbstreit understood that perfectly, even if his alma mater was the one on the cruel losing end.
