College football factotum Kirk Herbstreit went live Sunday morning with his updated College Football Playoff standings, tweeting his top six out into the ether.
Herbstreit’s rankings have nothing to do with the actual playoff, but there’s a crowd out there who wants to know what he thinks.
Ol’ Herby kept it conventional, as he’s wont to do, putting Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Ohio State in his hypothetical playoff, in that order. Just outside but looking in with a hungry glint about their eyes are Texas A&M and, amazingly enough, Iowa State.

Herbstreit’s rankings match almost exactly the official CFP rankings from last week, with the exception of the Cyclones at six in place of the recently deceased Florida Gators.
Florida last night was in position to mount a game winning drive against LSU when defensive back Marco Wilson fired the shoe of a tackled Tiger twenty yards up the field. The poor decision, to put it mildly, occurred after a successful third-down stop for the Gators. Wilson was penalized 15 yards and gave LSU a first down. The Gators desperation field goal several minutes later went wide, and LSU won, dropping Florida to 8-2 the week before the SEC championship game against Alabama.
The official updated playoff rankings will be released Tuesday night. Herbie is going to have to be good enough for now.
