Tragedy struck C.J. Beathard and his family this weekend with news out of Nashville that his 22-year-old brother Clayton was stabbed to death outside a bar early Saturday morning.

The news broke on Saturday morning, with the San Francisco 49ers — Beathard’s current team — having a game later that night against the Los Angeles Rams. Beathard did not attend the game.

But 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan did meet with Beathard following the devastating news. Shanahan spoke was with the quarterback for about an hour to show his support for Beathard and the family.

Later, that night, the 49ers defeated the Rams 34-31 to improve to 12-3 on the year. The win means very little compared to the tragedy that hit the Beathard family this weekend. However, after the game, Shanahan decided to share Beathard’s message to the team after San Francisco got the win.

“The last thing he said to me when I walked out the door, he stopped me and just goes ‘Make sure the guys go win this game,'” Shanahan said. “I didn’t want to say that at the beginning because this game doesn’t mean anything compared to his brother. We all know that.”
