Coaches at any level, in any sport, are supposed to come across as confident. They’re expected to have a belief that their team can overcome any odds and match up with any opponent.

Lane Kiffin doesn’t abide by those rules. And, without directly saying that he hates the fact that FAU opens the season against Ohio State — he clearly hates the fact that FAU opens the season against Ohio State.

Kiffin isn’t afraid to speak his mind on any subject. So, he said how he felt about opening the year against the Buckeyes in Columbus.

“There’s a lot of different ways to go about these things,” Kiffin said, according to Bucknuts. “Obviously, I didn’t schedule these. These were scheduled before we got here, from the last athletic director. I don’t think it is the best idea, especially following with UCF, another team that has been a top 10 team the last two years.

“The format that I think is the best, because you have to make money, you can’t not play these games. But you can play somebody that pays the same for the most part. It is not that big of a difference. So, you play, not necessarily, the team that year-in and year-out is the best team in the conference.”

Ohio State is coming off a 13-1 season and its second-straight B1G title. Earlier in the offseason, Kiffin said the biggest benefit of playing the Buckeyes was the paycheck.

FAU will receive $1.4 million to travel to Columbus to play the Buckeyes on Saturday. But it sounds like Kiffin would’ve gladly accepted less money to play someone in the middle-to-lower tier of the conference.

Perhaps that will be the new scheduling model of the future in Boca Raton.
