Legendary college basketball coach Roy Williams announces retirement

North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams is calling it a career, he announced on Thursday morning.
After 33 years as a Hall of Fame head coach, our beloved Tar Heel Roy Williams is announcing his retirement.

Williams’ head coaching career spans 33 seasons, and includes three National Championships with the Tarheels. He also had a successful stint with Kansas before leaving for UNC in 2003.
North Carolina is holding a press conference on Thursday afternoon.
Williams, 70, was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.
Williams leaves the sport with 903 career wins. He’s the only coach in college basketball history to have at least 400 wins at two different programs.
It will be interesting to see who North Carolina targets to replace Williams. UNC is now clearly the best open job on the market, followed by Texas and Oklahoma. Texas Tech coach Chris Beard could be a candidate, although the vast majority of his coaching experience has come in the state of Texas.
UNC-Greensboro head coach Wes Miller is also likely to receive consideration. He played at UNC and led his team to the NCAA Tournament this season.
Williams’ retirement press conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on Thursday.
