Alex Gibbs, a coaching legend in the NFL, has passed away according to multiple reports. He was 80 years old.
Gibbs was a coach in some capacity on some level for nearly 50 years. He was a two-time Super Bowl champion and a one-time North Carolina high school state champion. His last coaching job was with the Denver Broncos in 2013 as an offensive line consultant.
From 1966-68, Gibbs was the coach at Mount Airy High School in North Carolina. After three years, he jumped to the college ranks, where he had stops at Duke, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio State, Auburn and Georgia. While with the Buckeyes (1975-78), Gibbs was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
From 1984 through the rest of his career, Gibbs spent his time in the NFL. He started with the Broncos (1984-87) and spent more time in Denver than anywhere else. He was also with the organization from 1995-2003, serving as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach.
Other stops included the Los Angeles Raiders, San Diego Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks.
Gibbs was a member of the Broncos staff when the franchise won Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII in back-to-back seasons.
