Less than two months after accepting the position as defensive coordinator with the New England Patriots, Greg Schiano is stepping away from the job, according to multiple reports.
Schiano informed head coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft have his decision on Thursday. He shared his statement through the Patriots.
“I have informed Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick and I am stepping down from my position at the Patriots,” Schiano said via the statement. “This is not the result of any one event, but rather a realization that I need to spend more time on my faith and family. I don’t want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities.”

Schiano had been named the Patriots’ defensive coordinator on February 6.
Schiano had served as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State from 2016-18. He was not retained when Urban Meyer resigned and the university named Ryan Day the new head coach of the program.
Before becoming the defensive coordinator at Ohio State, Schiano was the head coach at Rutgers from 2001-11. In his 11 years with the Scarlet Knights, Schiano accumulated a 68-67 record and his teams appeared in six bowl games.
