Liam Robbins is looking like a key piece for a surprisingly competitive Minnesota hoops team in this year’s B1G race.
The 7-footer started his college career at Drake, but he transferred to the Gophers following last season. So far this year, Robbins is averaging 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks, but he went to another level Sunday night against Ohio State.
Facing an overmatched frontcourt, Robbins went to work, posting a game-high 27 points on 7-for-13 shooting. That ties Robbins’ season-high with the Gophers and was two shy of his career-best 29 points.
Beyond the scoring, Robbins recorded a new career-high with 14 rebounds, tied a career-high mark in assists with four, and dominated on the defensive end of the floor. He put up five blocks and two steals, helping to limit the Buckeyes to a 31.1% shooting night from the floor. Minnesota won the game, 77-60.
Marcus Carr continues to be the main scoring leader for the Gophers, but Robbins is a vital addition to the team. He is a versatile weapon and provides good length when going up against the strong frontcourts throughout the B1G.
Robbins has helped the team get off to a 3-2 start in conference play this season. The losses have come to Wisconsin and Illinois, both teams expected to make a serious run at the conference title in the preseason.
Meanwhile, the Gophers have beaten Iowa, Michigan State, and Ohio State with all three teams ranked in the top 25 at the time of the win. Can Minnesota stay competitive in the conference race the entire way?
