Liberty hits huge trick play, jumps out to early lead against Rutgers

Liberty may be one of the newest teams to FBS, but the Flames are trying to give Rutgers all it can handle Saturday.

With new head coach Hugh Freeze, the Flames are in their first season as a full-fledged FBS team. That hasn’t stopped them from entering the game against the Scarlet Knights as 7.5-point favorites and starting quickly in the game.

Liberty converted a couple of third downs but it was this trick play on first down that sparked the drive. A backward pass started the play with the Liberty receiver hitting a wide-open tight end for a huge gainer.

Liberty made it 7-0 less than four minutes into the game, but Rutgers has responded to make it 7-7 early:
