Longtime Indiana sportswriter and Hoosiers beat reporter Terry Hutchens has died following injuries sustained in a vehicle accident that occurred earlier this week. He was 60.
Hutchens spent three decades covering Indiana athletics, primarily on the basketball and football beat. He spent time at the Indianapolis News — later the Indianapolis Star — and CNHI Sports Indiana. He was a five-time winner of the Indiana Sportswriter of the Year Award.
Earlier this week, Hutchens was injured in a three-car accident that occurred in Fishers, Indiana. He had been in the hospital in critical condition.
During Indiana’s game against Central Arkansas on Wednesaday, the Hoosiers left Hutchens’ seat on media row open as a sign of respect.
Following the news, several media members and those associated with Indiana athletics expressed their condolences to Hutchens and his family.

Heartbreaking news. I remember I was a college freshman when I emailed a dozen sportswriters in town, begging them for a jobshadow. Hutch was the only one who responded. Picked me up and let me cover an IU game with him. I never forgot that. RIP. He will be missed. https://t.co/rcWtCMMRsY

He was one of the first people who called me when I got this job, his job. So many of us have never known the press corps without Hutch. We'll miss him so much. https://t.co/T0sN82161l
