It’s a tradition that is unique to Ohio State.
Losing your black stripe in Columbus is special. It means that you’re a true, official Buckeye. The tradition started in 2012 when Urban Meyer coach the program and has continued with Ryan Day in charge.
On Tuesday, LB Cade Stover, a Class of 2019 recruit, lost his black stripe and became the seventh member of his class to do so leading up to the 2019 season:

In order to lose your black stripe, a player has to impress coaches and prove that he belongs on the team. Stover, according to 247Sports, is a 4-star prospect and the No. 114 player overall regardless of position.
