There’s really no question that football is king in Happy Valley. The tradition and pride that comes with Penn State football is one of the most unique in the country.
That doesn’t mean Penn State fans can’t enjoy a little basketball, though. And on Saturday, the Nittany Lions had plenty of reason to celebrate after a thrilling win over No. 23 Iowa.
No. 21 Penn State knocked off Iowa 89-86, thanks in large part to the bench play of Izaiah Brockington and Curtis Jones, who combined for 39 points in the victory. Brockington led the Nittany Lions in scoring with 23, Jones and Lamar Stevens each had 16 and Myles Dread added 14.
With the win, Penn State improved to 12-2 on the season and will likely move up in the latest college basketball rankings that are released on Monday. And after the game, head coach Pat Chambers had the perfect comment about his team and the fans.
“This was the most amazing — look at this,” Chambers said regarding the crowd at the iconic Palestra arena in Philadelphia. “They say Penn State’s a football school, looks like it likes basketball, too.”
Penn State was one of the worst teams in the B1G a year ago, losing several close conference bouts. With talent and experience returning for the 2019-20 season, Chambers’ bunch has proven to be one of the top teams in the conference, at least so far.
Right now, Penn State sits at 2-1 in B1G play with wins over Maryland and Iowa and the lone loss to Ohio State. The Nittany Lions will be back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Rutgers.
