The Michigan State offense struggled in its first game against Tulsa, but Spartans kicker Matt Coghlin was ready to go.

Coghlin went 4-for-4 on field-goal attempts and made both of his extra points in Michigan State’s 28-7 victory. The Spartans took a very unusual path to 28 points with two touchdowns, two extra points, four field goals and a safety.

Coghlin is now 37-for-45 (82.2 percent) in his career at Michigan State, improving his mark as No. 1 in program history in field-goal percentage. As a sophomore during 2018, he earned a spot on the All-Big Ten first team and became one of the 20 semifinals for the Lou Groza Award for the nation’s top kicker.

Michigan State’s offense needs cast improvements, but the Spartans know what they have in Coghlin when drives stall in the scoring area.
