Illinois coach Lovie Smith has some good news about Illinois’ potential exposure to COVID-19 after playing Wisconsin in Week 1.

According to Smith, the Illini are “clean” of COVID-19.

“Our team is clean,” Smith told reporters on Wednesday morning. “As you can see, we’re kind of hunkered down in the bunker. We have a protocol in place that we follow daily. Assume everybody else is doing the same thing. But I know things can change. I know there’s an outbreak all over the country right now. But right now for our football team, not much has changed.”

That’s certainly welcomed news after Wisconsin was forced to shut down its program for seven days due to a COVID-19 outbreak that was discovered shortly after the Badgers defeated Illinois on Friday.

Illinois will now turn its focus to Purdue, another program that has been battling COVID-19 early on in the Big Ten season. Purdue coach Jeff Brohm missed last week’s game after testing positive for the virus.

Kickoff between the Boilermakers and Illini is at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday.
