An impressive chain of events gave Illinois its first touchdown of the day against the Duke Blue Devils. Namely: A muffed punt, an insane display of pocket presence from Luke Altmyer and a 1-yard rushing score by Kaden Feagin.
And it was a much-needed development for the Illini, considering they really struggled to move the ball to start out. The most impressive play of the drive is shown below; Luke Altmyer stepped up in the pocket and looked as if he was about to run to evade defenders, but instead kept his composure and found Justin Bowick near the pylon.
The play was originally called a touchdown, but Bowick was just outside the pylon when he caught the football and fell out of bounds.
Just 2 plays later, Illinois was in the end zone thanks to an easy rush from Kaden Feagin.
Illinois has a fantastic opportunity ahead of itself this season. The Illini face a relatively tame schedule and enter Saturday as the No. 11 team in the country, boasting a strong defensive front and a veteran QB in Altmyer. Some consider Illinois to be a dark horse Playoff contender, but there’s a long way to go before then.
For now, let’s see if the Illini can hold off a solid Duke squad.
