Mack Brown reveals he spoke with Urban Meyer regarding retirement decision

At 6 a.m. this morning, newly appointed North Carolina head coach Mack Brown received a phone call. It was Urban Meyer and he had a message to relay.
Tuesday morning, Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic reported that Meyer called Brown early to inform him that he’d be stepping down as Ohio State’s head coach. Brown said that Meyer talked about his health concerns as being the key reason he’s retiring.
“If I can’t coach like I need to coach, I can’t do it,” Meyer reportedly told Brown on the phone call. He also said he was struggling to coach and motivate the team due to those health concerns.

Meyer has battled painful headaches due to a cyst, something he had surgery on years ago. While he’s been given medicine for those headaches, the issues seem to hamper his ability to coach the way he sees necessary.
Before the 2011 season, Meyer also stepped down as Florida’s head coach, citing health concerns.
Meyer has led the Buckeyes to back-to-back B1G titles the last two seasons, including Saturday’s 45-24 win over Northwestern in the B1G Championship Game. In seven seasons, he won three conference titles and a national championship.
A press conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, where Meyer will officially announce his retirement.
