Marcus Freeman recently went on The Pivot Podcast and discussed a number of topics, including lessons learned from comments he made about Ohio State in a Players’ Tribune article in 2021.
In the Players’ Tribune article, Freeman mentioned not making “the wrong decision twice” when he decided to join Notre Dame. Freeman played for the Buckeyes in college and accepted the Notre Dame HC job in 2021.
However, Freeman clarified this week that he’s thankful for that experience and realized how his words may have sounded to Ohio State fans. Here’s his full quote from The Pivot Podcast:
“That was an eye-opening experience for me, but I needed it,” Freeman said. “You need to learn. You need those lessons to learn.
“I think about that article. You kind of do it that they interview you, and they write it for you kind of like that. You’re thinking that you are talking to Notre Dame fans. You are not thinking about anything else other than Notre Dame fans. And they said, ‘Why did you choose Notre Dame?’ And [I was like], ‘Oh man, I made a mistake. I don’t want to say no to Notre Dame twice.’ And poor choice of words because that’s all the people at Ohio State read was, ‘You regret your decision to choose Ohio State.’ No. Man, I wouldn’t be where I’m at without those years in Columbus, Ohio, and I value every part of it.”
For context, here’s an excerpt of what Freeman wrote in the Players’ Tribune back in 2021:
I can’t tell you exactly what it was that told us to come to Notre Dame, but there was something. We all know there’s something different about Notre Dame. We all know it’s something special. And I just thank God that I didn’t make the wrong decision twice.
Freeman finished his first full season as HC with a 9-4 record. Ohio State and Notre Dame will meet again in 2023 on Sept. 23.
