Marvin Harrison Jr. entered the 2023 season widely regarded as the best receiver in the country and a near lock to become a top-5 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. While he has done little to discredit those projections, Harrison did not receive first-team recognition for the AP midseason All-America list.
When that list dropped Wednesday, the Ohio State star found himself among the second-team nominations with Oregon’s Troy Franklin and South Carolina’s Xavier Legette. The first-team group of wide receivers consisted of LSU’s Malik Nabers, Missouri’s Luther Burden III and Washington’s Rome Odunze.
Through the first 6 games of the season, Harrison has 31 catches for 604 yards and 5 touchdowns. He’s also turned in 4 games with at least 100 receiving yards and 2 of those games included 160+ yards.
In comparison to the first-team receivers, Harrison ranks 10th in the country with 100.7 receiving yards per game while Nabers leads the nation with 122.9. Odunze is also over 122 yards per game with Burden at 115.4.
However, Harrison’s 19.48 yards per catch is the best of any player in the top 10 nationally for receiving yards per game. It’s also worth noting Harrison did not play extremely late into the game during blowout wins over Youngstown State, Western Kentucky or Purdue.
Ohio State did not land any player on the first-team All-America selections. TE Cade Stover and CB Denzel Burke joined Harrison on the second team.
At the end of the day, Harrison can certainly play his way onto the first team by the end of the year, but the bigger goal is currently to get past Penn State and remain undefeated.
