Maryland coach Mike Locksley gives inspiring speech in locker room after game-winning field goal

Maryland edged Illinois as time expired on a 32-yard field goal by Joseph Petrino on Friday night. The victory lifts Maryland to 3-0 on the season.

Taulia Tagovailoa completed 32 of his 43 passes for 350 yards and a touchdown. Tayon Fleet-Davis rushed for 62 yards on 11 carries, and also had a receiving touchdown.

Maryland coach Mike Locksley gave an inspiring speech in the locker room after the game:

The Maryland defense held Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters to 10-26 passing, 186 yards, and an interception. Nick Cross recorded the interception.

Locksley gave his assessment of how he thought Tagovailoa performed in his first game in front of a road crowd this season.

“I thought we all were a little affected by playing in a tough environment, it was a loud environment, our first road game, we started off with two home games and just not being in the confines of our normal routine, it took us a while to get settled down,” Locksley said, via 247Sports. “I thought early in the game they did a good job on defense trying to mix the coverages up for Taulia, but once we got a beat on what they wanted to do, we were able to get Taulia settled down and he made some big throws.”

Next up for Maryland is a home game on Sept. 25 vs. Kent State.
