Maryland recently unveiled a new helmet option ahead of the 2023 season and it’s sure to get fans excited.

The team put out a video captioned “Paint it Black,” which shows the traditional red Terps helmet before it’s picked up and moved to reveal a black version with red letters.

The team has worn black helmets for years, but not like this. The traditional black helmet worn by the team is a black base with the Maryland state flag on top. The team announced earlier this year that the state flag attire will be retired in favor of the classic “Script Terps” getup.

“I’m very excited to announce that we are moving back to an iconic uniform, a classic look, something that our fans have been clamoring for quite some time,” athletic director Damon Evans said in a release.

The black helmet is a refreshing addition to a classic uniform combo. The Terps kick off the 2023 season on Sep. 2 against Towson.
