There’s been utter chaos in College Park over the last five days. The events that have occurred revolving around former head coach DJ Durkin have caused an incredible strain on the football program.

Durkin was reinstated. Players walked out of a team meeting. An altercation occurred at the end of practice. Durkin was later terminated. Board of regents chair James Brady resigned. Those are just the major headlines from the week.

Linebacker Tre Watson is trying to hold things together though, and reassure students, fans and alumni that the team is sticking together through the turbulent times. Friday morning, he issued a thoughtful, sincere and strong message via Twitter.

“This entire situation has been one that our football team and Maryland community has absolutely dreaded these past 5 months,” Watson wrote. “Nothing that we say or do can gain what we truly want and that is our brother Jordan McNair to be back out there with us. So, we are doing everything we can to honor his legacy and do what is right for him. We have never sought revenge against Coach Durkin, the administration, or anyone else. We simply want everyone to do what is right and just. The support from our fan base has been incredible regardless of the number of people who show up to games, if students boycott, or anything else. This team is the strongest group of men I have ever been around and remain united in our cause to honor our brother every single game. We have another great opportunity to do so tomorrow and would love for any and everyone that’s free to come celebrate with us.”

Watson, who transferred from Illinois to join the Terrapins, has been a leader on and off the field. His message shows how valuable the senior has been in the locker room.

Maryland is 5-3 on the season with an opportunity to earn bowl eligibility with a win over Michigan State. Watson has had a spectacular senior campaign, racking up 78 tackles (tied for most in the B1G), four interceptions and three tackles for loss.

The Terrapins host Michigan State at noon ET on Saturday.
