With all the controversy and turmoil surrounding the Maryland football program in the months leading up to the start of the season, nobody would’ve been surprised if the Terrapins had major struggles on the field. But through the first two weeks of the year, it’s been the exact opposite.

Maryland has opened the season 2-0, accomplishing impressive feats in each of the two victories.

In Week 1, the Terrapins knocked off No. 23 Texas for a quality win over a ranked opponent. Last Saturday against Bowling Green, Maryland rushed for 444 yards, the most yardage accumulated on the ground by the Terps in 20 years.

So, yeah, it’s been a good start to 2018 in College Park. But it’s also a very surprising start.

Yahoo Sports listed Maryland’s 2-0 start among the most surprising in college football this year, mentioned alongside Duke, Cal, Arizona State and Hawai’i. The list was comprised of just five teams, and here’s how they ranked:

  1. Arizona state
  2. Hawai’i
  3. Cal
  4. Maryland
  5. Duke

The Terrapins put their 2-0 record on the line this weekend against Temple, who enters the contest 0-2. It will be the final non-conference matchup of the year.

Maryland has won its first two games of the season without head coach D.J. Durkin, who remains on administrative leave as an independent team investigates an alleged “toxic culture” surrounding the program.

Offensive coordinator Matt Canada has handled the head coaching duties on an interim basis.

The Terrapins will open B1G play on Saturday, Sept. 22 against Minnesota. It’s very possible they enter the conference season with a perfect 3-0 record.
